The book Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is a thrilling novel that includes: - a mysterious island, a strange photography and an unique orphanage. This book combines powerful images with a storyline that was compelling. If I had to rate this book with 5 being the highest rating, I would give it a 4 because I thoroughly enjoyed it and I could relate to some of the characters including Jacob.
Likes
I loved reading this book because it had such a dark tone that initially I couldn't tell if it was a horror story or an adventure. As the book went on I could see how the author used fiction to incorporate his images. I enjoyed being able to actually see a picture of the events when reading the book. It was interesting being able to compare your image of what the event looked like in your head with an actual picture. The main character Jacob was very humble and I thought that this was a good trait in him because he didn't like to show of his wealth like his mother.
The author used humor throughout the book, for example when "Jacob was howling like a Banshee" (Riggs 39). He gave each character have their own personality that made them stand out from each other. The book was like a puzzle in that every time you got a clue, you tried to see if you could solve it, and that made it very exciting to read. The book was very violent but the author didn't censor this and it made it more realistic and easier to understand what the characters are experiencing.
At the beginning of the book I thought it was a ghost story and the title and cover page were very misleading. It was actually science fiction with various dimensions and mystical creatures. A lot changed throughout the book and I had no idea what to expect and that’s what made this book exciting to read.
Dislikes
I didn't dislike many things in this book…only a few things. The main thing that I didn't enjoy was the ending of the book. I didn't like the cliffhanger and would have preferred to have known what happened to the characters. I personally didn't mind but some of the language was rough at some points in the book. However, I accept that in some ways the rough language made the book seem more real.
Recommendation
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading mysteries with horror, action, and science fiction combined. The images and fonts used make this book spooky when you read it and that makes it even better. People who enjoy fantasy books such as Harry Potter, where a regular teenage boy’s life is changed by drastic events, will love this book. As a reader you have no idea what to expect because the author keeps on throwing you off the trail at each event in the book. This was a great book and I recommend it to anybody who enjoys exciting mysteries.
