In my final blog post of this month I have decided to talk about water. Around the world many countries are struggling to find enough fresh water to support their farms and provide drinking water for their people. Only 1% of the water on Earth is drinking water, and the rest is either frozen or salt water. I believe we need to stop wasting and polluting water and treat it as a precious resource that we should protect for future generations.
Conserving
Countries with plenty of water should start conserving it. For example, in the United States, the average citizen uses 80 gallons of water per day. This amount is staggering when compared to countries such as Mexico where the average citizen only uses 15 gallons of water per day. A person can only survive 3-4 days without water as opposed to 2 weeks without food. This shows how vital water is for the survival of humanity.
Toxics
Water pollution is when toxic substances enter water bodies such as lakes, river, and oceans. The substances decompose on the bottom and then degrade the quality of water. It is a disaster for aquatic ecosystems, and makes the water undrinkable. This type of pollution can be caused by many factors including city sewage and industrial waste discharge. Water can also be contaminated by fertilizers from nearby farms. A tragic example of this in Florida is Lake Apopka which was one of the most famous Bass fisheries in the US until turned into a dead zone by phosphate poisoning from local farms. There have been reports of sightings of two-headed alligators. As a society we need to take more care of our precious water sources and invest in different solutions to solve such problems.
Solutions
There are many ways to conserve water, that can be as simple as fixing drain and irrigation pipes, that can save thousands of gallons of water every year. Just taking a shower instead of a bath can save 10 gallons. If I were in charge of the world I would drill more wells in dry places as a well can give water to hundreds of people and make it much safer and more efficient to get water. Next, I would limit the amount of water allowed for plants and subsidize studies looking for plants that thrive in dry conditions. I would have stricter controls for industrial discharge of contaminated water. We should also be more efficient because automatic timers often waste thousands of gallons every week when plants don’t need the water.
In conclusion, I believe that water is a major problem that our society faces. With global warming, and an increase in pollution and population, we will see a decline in clean water with drastic results across the world. If we don’t act soon, and make a dramatic change to our current path and fix this water situation, many will perish and others will see a deterioration in their way of life.
