The society we live in faces many challenges in order to become a healthier and more diverse community. Since the beginning of time humans have emigrated to different regions and countries for reasons including war, poverty or just wanting to make a fresh start. If I were in charge of the world I would change the rules on immigration especially here in the United States.
Firstly, I would use my power to legalize the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. This would add around $1.5 trillion to the U.S Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and help this country solve its huge debt problems. As these people become legal citizens the U.S could tax them and this would boost the economy. When legal, these people would earn higher wages, which would create an increase in consumer purchasing which is the number one economic driver for the US economy.
Facts
The second reason I would change the current immigration system is because nearly 50 percent of agricultural workers, 17 percent of construction workers and 12 percent of food preparation worker don’t have legal papers. Without legal papers these people cannot register properly for healthcare, insurance, banking or mortgages. If the United States lost all these workers the country would grind to a halt as many industries rely heavily on them for labor such as construction and horticulture. Immigrants also make up 23 percent of the labor force in high-tech manufacturing, which now employs over 70 million people across the US. This fact demonstrates the importance of having a growing population and immigrants have the largest families. The Hispanic Community, for example, is the fastest growing minority in the US today. Countries such as Russia, with its declining population, have major problems such as finding people to work in their industries. A growing population, on the other hand, such as in the US, leads to an increasing tax base and a healthy country.
Families
Families around the world are often separated with the children living in the home country and the parents based overseas for work related reasons. More than 5,100 children, whose parents are illegal immigrants in the US, are deported or detained each year. The police and Homeland Security waste huge sums trying to catch and deport illegal immigrants when their resources would be better spent elsewhere. These immigrants are just trying to provide for their families and it would be much more productive if they were legal citizens.
Politics
Almost 75% of new immigrants vote for the Democrats which means that the Democrats encourage more immigrants to enter the country to get their votes. Republicans, unfortunately, are against immigration and are trying to expel illegal immigrants despite the fact the country needs them. It is a major debate and the solution is unclear but there are ways to improve it. One thing I would do to improve the current system would be to make it easier for families to get a passport if a member of the family is a citizen. Next I would give healthcare to new immigrants for free, along with other benefits, to allow them a quicker and easier passage into the country.
In conclusion, I believe there are many problems with the current immigration system. If I were in charge of the world I would attempt to fix the current system. There are no quick fixes, and I understand it is a complicated issue, but I believe we badly need immigration reform and there are many changes that need to be made.
