Spring has just arrived, and looking at all the beautiful flowers blooming, I got inspiration to write about bees. I see them everyday and yet I only know a little about them. What do you think of when you see a bee? Do you worry you’ll be stung, or do you think about the delicious honey they produce? After doing some research I learned that bees are one of the worlds most interesting and remarkable insects.
Interesting Information
There are over 20,000 varieties of bees in the world. Some of them are killer bees, but most off them are best known for producing honey. Bees produce honey to feed their children for the winter. Beekeepers harvest honey from bees by wearing a special suit that protects them from stings. They use smoke to calm the bees before removing the honey.
Types
Bees are some of the hardest working creatures on the planet because of their arborous work ethic. Our society would be a lot different without bees. According to onegreenplanet, bees are responsible for pollinating about one-third of the flowers and crops. There are around 25,000 different types of bees species world wide! The most common of these species are the honeybee, carpenter bee, and bumblebee. An interesting fact is that honeybees die after they have stung there opponent. Up to 5,000 bees can be controlled by a single Queen. A hive is consisted of workers, soldiers, and builders. The workers collect pollen to produce honey, the soldiers protect the hive and queen, and the builders keep the colony healthy.
Honey
Lots of bees produce a substance called honey. It is used in many different things around the world. It is used as food, preservative and for medicinal purposes, such as treating allergies. It is used in a variety of medicines, because it tastes good and fights bacteria. Honey can last for thousands of years before spoiling. It can also be used for treating allergies. Just a small amount of local honey has to be consumed on a daily basis, which will help fight allergies. It is healthier and more enriched than artificial sugars. It contains fewer calories than regular sugar.
Bee populations have fallen in recent years for reasons, which are not clear. This has caused concern because of the vital role they play in pollinating crops. Hopefully, the population of these amazing insects will stabilize in the future. These humble, buzzing bugs deserve huge appreciations for helping provide our society with fruits, vegetables, beautiful flowers and delicious honey!
